Global Boat Show Leaders Gather in Washington D.C. for IFBSO Congress 2026

More than just a conference, the IFBSO Congress is where the global boat show community comes together to share ideas, build relationships, and explore the trends shaping the future of marine events.

In May 2026, boat show organisers, marine industry association leaders, and event professionals from around the world gathered in Washington, D.C. for the annual ICOMIA & IFBSO Congress. Hosted by the National Marine Manufacturers Association (NMMA), the event brought together representatives from some of the world's leading boat shows for four days of discussion, learning, and collaboration.

The programme focused on many of the issues currently influencing the event industry, including consumer trends, sustainability, event technology, workforce development, marketing, diversity and inclusion, and the evolving role of live events in a rapidly changing world.

A recurring theme throughout the Congress was the importance of creating meaningful experiences. Speakers challenged delegates to think beyond traditional event formats and focus on how boat shows can deliver memorable, engaging, and value-driven experiences for visitors, exhibitors, and stakeholders.

Delegates also explored how technology is reshaping the event landscape. Sessions highlighted the growing role of artificial intelligence, digital engagement tools, and data-driven decision-making, while also recognising that human connection remains at the heart of successful events.

Sustainability remained a key topic throughout the programme. Industry leaders shared practical examples of initiatives already being implemented at boat shows around the world, while discussions with environmental partners explored opportunities for greater collaboration and long-term impact. The Congress reinforced the industry's commitment to protecting the waterways and marine environments that form the foundation of recreational boating.

Workforce development and attracting new audiences were also high on the agenda. Delegates discussed strategies to engage younger generations, create pathways into marine careers, and ensure the boating industry remains relevant and accessible to future consumers.

Beyond the formal programme, Congress provided opportunities for delegates to exchange ideas with peers facing similar challenges in different markets. These conversations are one of the defining characteristics of the IFBSO community, allowing organisers to learn directly from one another and share practical solutions that can be applied in their own regions.

"The presentations provide valuable insights, but the real value of Congress is bringing the global boat show community together," said IFBSO President Niels Klarenbeek. "When organisers openly share experiences, challenges, and successes, everyone benefits. That spirit of collaboration is what makes IFBSO unique."

As the global voice of boat show organisers, IFBSO continues to create opportunities for its members to learn from one another, benchmark performance, and strengthen the role that boat shows play in growing recreational boating worldwide.

The Congress concluded with the announcement that the 2027 edition will be hosted in Istanbul, Türkiye, from 31 May to 3 June 2027, where the global boat show community will once again come together to share ideas, build partnerships, and shape the future of the industry.

For IFBSO members, the full Congress Report and presentation summaries are available in the Members Area.
